6. Joe Simpson:Conquered Siula Grande

The first ones to make it to the west peak of Siula Grande in Peruvian Andes, were Simon Yates and Joe Simpson. On the way down, for the reason of being confronted with natural disaster, Yates had no choice but to drop Simpson in a wounded state, 100 feet into an ice crevasse. However, as luck would have it, Simpson survived the fall and it took him three days to crawl back to the base camp.

7. Truman Duncan: Cut in Two by a Train

Truman Duncan, a Railroad switchman, incidentally fell off a moving train car and was swept underneath and sliced into two. He lost both his legs and a kidney but he showed tremendous courage by calling paramedics on his cell phone. He could hold on for them for almost 45 minutes and later survived 23 surgeries. Unbelievable!

8. Aron Ralston:Amputated his lower right Arm to Survive the Mountains

During the course of a canyoning trip in Blue John Canyon (near Moab, Utah), on May 2003, Aaron Ralston was hit by a  boulder which fell and pinned his right forearm, crushing it. He tried for five days to lift the boulder and when he failed, he carved his name, date of birth and date of death into the boulder. He drank his own urine because of lack of water and videotaped his last goodbyes to his family. Ultimately as an extreme desperate measure, he decided to bow his arm against the chockstone and snapped his radius and ulna bones. What follows is even scarier. He cut the soft tissues around the break in his arm with th help of his multiuse tool and then used the pliers to tear the harder tendons. After he was rescued, Ralston's arm was taken out from under the boulder and cremated. The ashes were handed to him and he returned to the boulder and left the ashes there.

9. Robert Evans:Survived Being Hit by Car and later by a Train

According to the police officials, it was an extreme case of oddity that someone was hurt by a car and later by a train on the same night. This happened on a fateful morning of September 2008 when Robert Evans (46 year old homeless man) was hit by a car and while on his way back from the hospital to his camp, he was knocked off by a train from a narrow bridge into a creek. He survived two accidents in a span of seven hours. Evans was hit by the railing on the side of a train as it seems the Railroad bridge was only wide enough to accommodate the train tracks and was not good enough for pedestrians or other traffic.

10. Mauro Prosperi:Survived 9 days in the Sahara Desert

Prosperi, a keen endurance runner, took part in the 1994 Marathon des Sables (Marathon of the Sands) in Morocco. Part way through the 6-day 233 kilometre event a sandstorm caused Prosperi to lose his way. He ended up disoriented and ran in the wrong direction, ultimately running several hundred kilometres into Algeria. After 36 hours he ran out of food and water. He survived by drinking his own urine and eating bats resident in an abandoned mosque and the occasional snake found in the desert.

Not wishing to die a long drawn out death, Prosperi attempted to commit suicide in the mosque by slitting his wrists with a pen knife he had with him. The attempt failed - lack of water had caused Prosperi's blood to thicken and clotted the wound before he died.

After nine days alone in the desert he was found by a nomadic family and taken to an Algerian military camp and from there to a hospital. He was 186 miles off route, and reportedly had lost between 30 and 40 pounds (18 kg) in body weight.
